Why do people find the ocean so enjoyable and relaxing? Is there something about moving or falling water that can minimize the effects of stress? If so, how can we achieve this at home or at the office when we may be hundreds of miles from the beach?
It all goes back to the fact that we are 70%+ water just like the planet we live on. Because everything has a frequency that it vibrates at, maybe moving water vibrates in tune with the water within us giving us a sense of peace. At least something is happening to help alleviate the effects of stress that we deal with every day.
What’s interesting is if you take a room full of tuning forks and set them in motion, in a short while all the tuning forks will vibrate the same, together. They have an affinity for one another. Something similar may be happening with moving water and the water in us. It isn’t by chance that we AND planet Earth are made up of 70%+ water. And moving water is one of the best stress busters.
We become stressed when we and our environment are not in harmony. And since we are living in a stressful world that we can’t do anything about, is there something that we CAN do that will minimize the effects of stress in our day to day lives? Yes, and it involves moving or falling water.
Many people have found that having aquariums with tropical fish are great stress busters, very soothing to watch giving a sense of tranquility and enjoyment. Since there is a pump circulating water through the tank, there is also the sound of moving or falling water as well. And I’m wondering if the sound of the water does more for us even more so than watching the slow, languid movements of the fish.
From the small aquarium to those with hundreds of gallons of water, there is a wide assortment of shapes, sizes and types. Ten gallon aquariums usually are rather inexpensive and can be bought in kits. Just set up and add water and fish. Just keep in mind that there are chemicals to add to city water to take out chlorine, chloramines, ammonia and heavy metals so your fish will keep living. And the fish need to be fed every day just like any pet.
You can set up a fresh water or a salt water fish tank. However, keep in mind that a salt water setup can be more expensive than a fresh water. The advantage of a fresh water setup is less expense. The downside is that the fish are not as brilliantly colored as the salt water fish.
Salt water aquariums are quite beautiful. The colors of the fish go from brilliant yellow or orange to dark, vibrant purple and everything in between including polka dots. They may also include anemones and other animals that you would never find in fresh water tanks. These tanks are beautiful, vibrant with color and can be quite the stress busters with a definite, pleasant contrast in our daily lives.
So, do your due diligence. Get information on what is involved with setting up and maintaining an aquarium. If you decide to go that route, choose whether fresh water or salt water. Both types have upkeep such as feeding the fish, adding water as it evaporates and cleaning the tanks.
If you decide that an aquarium is not for you, there is another falling water item that is less expensive and virtually no upkeep except adding water and cleaning only every few months. No fish to feed. That is a tabletop water fountain.
A tabletop water fountain can have either bubbling water or falling water so that soothing sense of peace is achieved in your stress management. They are smaller than the ten gallon fish tanks and take up much less space on a table or desk top. They come in many styles adding to your decor, perhaps, more so than a fish tank. And you can activate them when you want to. Aquariums need to have the pump running all the time.
So no matter what you decide, either of these items can minimize the effects of stress in your life. In fact, they can be a more enjoyable part of your stress management program.
Next time, we will look at why taking time for oneself can help reduce stress in our lives and give us a greater sense of serenity.
Have a great week.
